Before you decide to donate blood, it is essential to know if you are eligible. Blood banks follow strict criteria to ensure the safety of both the donor and the recipient.
Basic Eligibility Criteria
- Age: You must be between 18 and 60 years old.
- Weight: You must weigh at least 45 kg (50 kg is preferred in some centers).
- Health: You must be in generally good health and feeling well on the day of donation.
- Hemoglobin Level: Your hemoglobin must be at least 12.5 g/dl for women and 13.0 g/dl for men.
Who Cannot Donate?
You may be temporarily or permanently deferred from donating if you:
- Have a cold, flu, sore throat, or infection.
- Have recently taken certain medications (like antibiotics).
- Have had a tattoo or body piercing in the last 6 months.
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have recently given birth.
- Have tested positive for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, or Malaria.
